Meet Denzel Currie - Graphic Designer by Day, Streetwear Artist by Night.

Known as CurrieGOAT, Denzel Currie creates incredible works of hand-painted art on canvas as well as clothing, each of which has been inspired by a great story. As Denzel says, “Great art tells stories and great stories can help us live our lives a little bit better.” His YouTube videos explain the inspiration behind his pieces and are all about self-improvement through meaningful art.

We chatted with Denzel about who he is, what he does, and where you can purchase some of his inspiring creations.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?

My name is Denzel Currie (not the rapper). I am a 27-year-old streetwear artist based in North London, and I make and sell hand-painted clothing online.

2. What was your inspiration in becoming a streetwear artist?

I’ve worked as a graphic designer for 3 years and I needed a creative outlet that wasn’t connected to my day job. In December 2018 I made a list of all the things I loved to do creatively and streetwear art was something I really wanted to try out. I had seen the work of other artists like Warren Lotas and Slummpy Kev and was so inspired! In March 2019 I started posting a bunch of stuff from my list and the Streetwear art was what stuck.

3. Describe your artistic style.

It’s a mixture of cozy & nerdy vibes with an emphasis on color and storytelling. The visual style is cel-shaded (a term used for digital artwork where the shading is done with hard lines instead of blending), I never blend my shadows. I love hard lines in my work and I think my use of light and shadow is what makes a lot of my work stand out on the garment.

4. So far, what has been your favorite design, and why?

I made a piece based on a Tibetan mask. It was a beige sweatshirt with red masks on the front and arms. I think the balance between the concept and the colors in the piece was spot on. I loved it so much I decided to make it the first piece from my clothing line which is dropping 20th September

5. Who is your fashion icon?

No favorites but I respect and look up to everyone that has been able to make something for themselves using their creativity. Heron Preston, Tyler the Creator, Virgil Abloh, Jerry Lorenzo to name a few.

6. What/who do you draw inspiration from?

My work is based on stories, all of the media I consume is based on timeless stories and I always want to have that featured prominently in my work. I love anime but I don’t paint it on my clothes because anime is a creative interpretation of Japanese legend and folk law. Naruto is the “Kitsune, and Ninja”, Bleach is “Shinigami and Samurai” and I always say “why sample the sample?”. If Kanye makes a beat with a Nina Simone sample in it, I wouldn’t sample Kanye’s version I would go to the original.

7. What is your favorite fabric to work with?

Whichever fabric holds the paint the best. So far the best is denim for me but if I could find a way to paint cleanly on corduroy that would be all I would ever use!

8. Where can people purchase your designs?

I launched my website on the 20th of September where all of my hand-painted work, along with pieces from my cut and sew clothing line will be sold.

9. How does one go about taking care of the clothing?

Hand wash and air dry is always best and never iron directly on the paint. It’s a delicate piece of art and you need to treat it as such.

10. What's your favorite sneaker?

ASAP Nast X Converse, the yellow corduroy with the red one star. SO FIRE!
